January 10, 2017, Mautu, Fako State, Ambazonia, Cameroonian Occupation Forces abducted over nine innocent civilians and inflicted injuries on many others during a violent attack. This incident is a grim illustration of the escalating human rights abuses and War Crimes committed in the ongoing war between Ambazonia and Cameroon. Civilians in Ambazonia are routinely subjected to abductions, extrajudicial killings, and brutal assaults, deepening the humanitarian crisis and highlighting grave violations of International Law.
These actions blatantly contravene Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, which mandates the humane treatment of individuals not actively engaged in hostilities. Abductions, acts of violence, and extrajudicial killings are explicitly prohibited under this provision. The deliberate targeting of non-combatants is a flagrant breach of the principle of distinction, a cornerstone of International Humanitarian Law that requires combatants to distinguish between civilians and military targets.
The global community must also intensify efforts to facilitate a peaceful dialogue aimed at resolving the war. The suffering of the Ambazonian people cannot be ignored any longer, and failure to act only enables further atrocities. Upholding International Humanitarian Law and protecting civilians in war zones is a collective obligation, critical to restoring peace and justice in Ambazonia.
Additionally, these atrocities meet the definition of war crimes under Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Specifically, Article 8(2)(c)(i) criminalizes violence against life and person, including murder, cruel treatment, and torture, in non-International armed conflicts. The abduction and injury of unarmed civilians in Mautu underscore the systematic nature of these violations, pointing to an alarming disregard for the rule of law and basic human dignity.
