June 24, 2023, in Ekona, Fako State, southern Ambazonia: Cameroon Occupation Forces launched a brutal attack on the local Ambazonian community. The assault included the abduction of five civilians, severe injuries inflicted using an axe, and the deliberate burning of the community’s main store and several homes. These heinous acts left numerous individuals injured and displaced, plunging the affected area into chaos and distress. Among the captured were youths identified as Batran and Samba, highlighting the deliberate targeting of non-combatants.
War Crimes Under International Law
These actions are unmistakable war crimes under International Law. Attacks deliberately targeting civilians, causing bodily harm, and destroying civilian property violate the Geneva Conventions and other International humanitarian standards. By assaulting and abducting civilians who are entitled to protection in times of war, the Cameroon forces disregarded the fundamental principles of distinction and proportionality that govern armed conflicts. These principles mandate that civilians must be shielded from violence and that harm to non-combatants must be avoided at all costs.
Violation of Human Rights
The abduction of five civilians in Ekona also constitutes gross violations of human rights. The forced abductions and attacks undermine the basic rights to life, security, and dignity, which are enshrined in International Human Rights treaties like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The deliberate burning of homes and stores not only destroys livelihoods but also represents a systematic effort to intimidate and suppress the Ambazonian community. These acts amount to collective punishment, which is prohibited under International Law.
Accountability and Justice
This abduction of five civilians underscores the urgent need for International accountability mechanisms to address human rights abuses in Ambazonia. The International community must act decisively to investigate and hold perpetrators accountable for these crimes, ensuring justice for victims and upholding the rule of law.
