Ambazonia state is currently embroiled in a dire crisis. Escalating violence and widespread human rights abuse have created a humanitarian emergency. In the past 24 hours, Cameroonian Occupation Forces have committed severe breaches of international law, endangering civilians and violating their fundamental rights.
Arbitrary Arrests and Detentions
Civilians in Bamenda, a city in Northern Ambazonia, are facing arbitrary arrests and detentions. These actions occur without due process, directly contravening Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Article 9 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Families are torn apart, and individuals are held in custody without access to legal representation or a fair trial.
Torture and Inhumane Treatment
Reports confirm the use of torture by Cameroon occupation forces. Detainees suffer physical and psychological abuse, with some subjected to brutal interrogation methods. The establishment of secret torture chambers violates Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions and the Convention Against Torture. Victims endure unimaginable pain, and their basic dignity is stripped away.
Targeting and Killing of Civilians
The violent has led to the tragic loss of civilian lives. At least five innocent people have been killed in recent attack. These deaths constitute a breach of Article 51 of Additional Protocol 1 to the Geneva Conventions, which aims to protect civilians in war zones. Families mourn their loved ones, and communities live in fear of further violence.
International Community’s Role
While Cameroon bears responsibility for its blatant disregard of international humanitarian and human rights laws, urgent action is needed. The Ambazonia Governing Council (AGovC) appeals to the international community to intervene. Diplomatic pressure, sanctions, and humanitarian assistance are crucial. The world must hold Cameroon accountable and ensure that civilians in Ambazonia are protected.
