October 13, 2021, Mezam State, Northern Ambazonia, the situation took a tragic turn as the Cameroon Occupation Forces committed a heinous act of violence against innocent and unarmed civilians. Eyewitnesses reported that these forces abducted, tortured, and ultimately killed a number of civilians, including women and children. The brutality was indiscriminate, with no consideration given to age or gender, as the victims were simply civilians caught in the ongoing conflict.
This act of violence left a deep scar in the affected communities, who were left to deal with the trauma of losing loved ones in such a brutal manner. The deliberate targeting of civilians is a violation of basic human rights, and the witnesses’ accounts painted a chilling picture of the inhumanity perpetrated by the occupying forces.
This incident represents a War Crime, as it involves the abduction, torture, and killing of innocent civilians. Under international law, particularly the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their additional protocols, such actions are strictly prohibited. Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions outlines the basic protections for civilians, including the prohibition of murder, torture, and cruel treatment of non-combatants.

These violations are classified as War Crimes, as they intentionally target individuals who are not participating in hostilities. The use of violence against civilians, such as the torture and execution described in this instance, also violates Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which specifically criminalizes acts of intentional killing, torture, and other inhumane acts committed during armed conflicts.
Moreover, this atrocity could be considered a crime against humanity under Article 7 of the Rome Statute, which includes widespread or systematic attacks directed against civilian populations. The actions of the Cameroon Occupation Forces in Mezam State, where civilians were deliberately targeted, are part of a broader pattern of repression and violence against the Ambazonian population, and they constitute a grave violation of international human rights and humanitarian law.
These crimes demand accountability and immediate action from the international community to prevent further violations and seek justice for the victims. The perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions, and reparations must be made to the survivors and families of the victims in order to restore their dignity and rights.
