July 10, 2024, Bamenda, Mezam State, Northern Ambazonia: Killing of Two Civilians, by Cameroon Occupation Forces near Mbengwi Road (Second Mancho Street). One victim was reportedly seized from a location called Rendez-vous, while the other was abducted from their home. Both were taken to a nearby junction and shot at close range. These victims, both innocent civilians, were deliberately targeted and executed, constituting a War Crime under International Humanitarian Law (IHL).
This act is a direct violation of Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, which prohibits the targeting, killing, and mistreatment of non-combatants in war zones. The Killing of Two Civilians and the execution of civilians without due process reflect the unlawful use of force. Such deliberate targeting breaches the principle of distinction, which mandates that parties in a conflict must differentiate between combatants and civilians to avoid harm to those uninvolved in hostilities.
Spreading Terror Among Civilians
Furthermore, this atrocity violates Article 51(2) of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, which prohibits acts or threats of violence aimed at spreading terror among civilians. The killing of Two Civilians at close range is not only a direct attack on protected persons but also instills fear within the local population. Such actions disregard the protections guaranteed under IHL to safeguard civilian lives and dignity during armed conflict.
Human Rights Violations
The extrajudicial killings of Two civilians carried out by Cameroon Occupation Forces constitute severe violations of human rights. International Human Rights Law (IHRL) guarantees the right to life, freedom from torture, and protection from arbitrary detention. The abduction and execution of civilians without due process blatantly infringe on these rights, further emphasizing the oppressive actions taken against the people of Ambazonia.
Call for Accountability and Justice
The international community must hold Cameroon Occupation Forces accountable for these grave violations of International Laws. Investigations should be conducted, and those responsible must face justice for their actions. Additionally, protective measures should be implemented to safeguard civilians in Ambazonia, ensuring adherence to IHL and IHRL to prevent further atrocities.
