October 24, 2020, Kumba Meme State, Southern Ambazonia, was violently thrust into chaos and mourning as the Cameroon Occupation Forces committed an act of unspeakable brutality. What should have been an ordinary day of learning turned into a scene of horror, as gunfire erupted, shattering the sanctity of education and leaving devastation in its wake.
The violence struck at the very heart of the community, targeting the most innocent—children. As the dust settled and anguished cries filled the air, the grim reality of the atrocity unfolded before the eyes of helpless parents and onlookers.
Seven innocent students, full of dreams and aspirations, were abruptly torn from their classrooms, their young lives thrust into darkness by the cruel hands of armed forces. In a barbaric act of aggression, they were forcibly abducted from the very space meant to nurture and protect them.
Their terrified pleas for mercy went unheard, their fate sealed by the cold indifference of those who wielded power through fear. The deafening sounds of gunfire drowned out their cries, replacing an atmosphere of knowledge and hope with one of terror and death. The once-secure walls of their school had become a prison of fear, a place where their innocence was violently stripped away.
The attack left not only physical scars but a deep psychological wound upon the entire community. Parents who had sent their children to school with expectations of a brighter future were instead met with the unbearable grief of loss and uncertainty.

The school, a symbol of progress and development, was now a place of sorrow, its classrooms emptied of laughter and learning. The people of Kumba were left traumatized, grappling with the realization that even the most vulnerable among them were not spared from the relentless cruelty of the occupation forces.
This heinous act constitutes a War Crime Under International Law, violating fundamental protections granted to civilians, particularly children. The abduction of students from their classrooms and their subsequent execution directly contravenes Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions, which prohibits violence against persons taking no active part in hostilities, including murder, cruel treatment, and taking of hostages. Furthermore, the deliberate targeting of children and educational institutions is classified as a grave breach of International Humanitarian Law, as outlined in Article 8(2)(b)(ix) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which Criminalizes attacks against schools. Additionally, this act falls under Article 7 of the Rome Statute, constituting crimes against humanity due to its systematic nature and targeting of defenseless civilians.
The murder of children in a learning environment represents an egregious violation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which guarantees children the right to education and protection from violence. The perpetrators of this atrocity must be held accountable before the law to ensure justice for the victims and prevent further violations of International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.
