June 21, 2018, Mezam State, Northern Ambazonia: The Cameroon Occupation Forces carried out a violent assault that resulted in the abduction and killing of five innocent and unarmed civilians.
In addition to the fatalities, countless others were severely injured, while many families were displaced and left homeless as a result of the attack. This heinous act not only inflicted deep suffering on the victims and their loved ones but also caused widespread devastation in the community. Such actions reflect a blatant disregard for International Law and basic human rights, amounting to clear War Crimes.
Under international humanitarian law, specifically the Geneva Conventions of 1949, violence against civilians, including murder and forced displacement, is strictly prohibited. Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions outlines the protection of civilians and those not actively participating in hostilities. The abduction and subsequent killing of unarmed individuals violate this provision, as such acts constitute murder and cruel treatment. These are grave breaches of international law, particularly in the context of internal armed conflict.
The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) further classifies such actions as war crimes under Article 8(2)(c)(i), which prohibits violence to life and person, including murder, mutilation, and cruel treatment. The deliberate targeting of unarmed civilians who pose no threat represents a flagrant violation of the principles of distinction and proportionality, which require that civilians must not be targeted in armed conflicts.
Additionally, the attack caused forced displacement, leaving many homeless, which violates Article 17 of Protocol II to the Geneva Conventions, prohibiting the displacement of civilians unless absolutely necessary for their safety. Forcing civilians to flee their homes through violence further compounds the suffering of already vulnerable populations.
The events of June 21, 2018, highlight the severity of the atrocities committed by the Cameroon Occupation Forces in Northern Ambazonia. These crimes demand accountability and urgent action from the international community to investigate and prosecute those responsible. Upholding international humanitarian law is critical to protecting innocent lives and ensuring justice for victims of such horrific acts.
