January 25, 2019, Mpundu Balong Muyuka, Fako State, Southern Ambazonia, Cameroon’s Occupying Forces carried out an abhorrent and unforgivable act of violence against defenseless and unarmed civilians.
In the early hours of the day, ten innocent Ambazonian civilians were forcefully taken from their homes, subjected to unimaginable brutality, and then executed in cold blood.
This massacre was not an isolated incident but rather part of a larger pattern of violence inflicted upon the Ambazonian people, exacerbating their suffering. The victims, who had no means of defending themselves, were caught in the crossfire of an ongoing conflict they did not choose to be part of.
The brutal treatment they endured left deep emotional scars, affecting not only their families but also the entire community. This senseless act of violence, carried out by those entrusted with maintaining peace and security, shattered the sense of safety and trust in the region.
Eyewitnesses of the atrocity have shared their harrowing accounts, describing the terror and helplessness they felt witnessing the abductions and subsequent murders. The community, in shock and mourning, has struggled to cope with the trauma left behind. The loss of these ten lives is not just a personal tragedy for the families but a stark reminder of the horrors that innocent civilians face in regions plagued by conflict. It serves as a testament to the ongoing and escalating violence against the people of Ambazonia.
This act is clearly a war crime under international law, specifically violating the Geneva Conventions, which govern the protection of civilians during times of armed conflict. According to Article 3 common to all four Geneva Conventions, civilians should be protected from violence, threats, and acts of cruelty.
The abduction, execution, and brutal treatment of these civilians constitute an attack on their humanity, violating the principles of distinction and proportionality outlined in international humanitarian law. The perpetrators of this crime are guilty of committing an extrajudicial killing, a war crime under Article 8 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. This provision prohibits the intentional killing of civilians who are not directly participating in hostilities. The scale of the violence and the deliberate targeting of unarmed civilians further accentuates the criminal nature of the act, which also falls under crimes against humanity due to its widespread and systematic nature.
