January 5, 2021, Mezam State, Northern Ambazonia, Cameroon Occupation Forces carried out a brutal and indiscriminate attack on innocent and unarmed civilians. According to eyewitness accounts, civilians were forcibly abducted, subjected to extreme acts of torture, and ultimately murdered in cold blood by the occupying forces.
The violence did not stop at human casualties; in a devastating act of destruction, over 20 homes belonging to civilians were deliberately burned down. The targeted burning of homes rendered countless families homeless, stripping them of their properties, possessions, and means of livelihood.
These calculated acts of brutality were not just acts of violence but part of a larger strategy to instill fear, exert dominance, and suppress the Ambazonian people’s resistance. The deliberate destruction of homes, along with the inhumane treatment and killings, reflects the oppressive and merciless nature of the occupation, forcing survivors into a state of despair and displacement.

This attack constitutes a grave War Crime and a direct violation of international humanitarian and human rights laws. The Fourth Geneva Convention (1949), Article 3, strictly prohibits violence against civilians, including murder, torture, and cruel treatment.
The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Article 8, classifies the deliberate targeting and killing of civilians, torture, and the destruction of property without military necessity as War Crimes. Additionally, the large-scale burning of homes is a clear violation of Article 7 of the Rome Statute, which defines systematic attacks on a civilian population as crimes against humanity.
Furthermore, the destruction of civilian properties and forced displacement of residents violate Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which guarantees individuals the right to housing and an adequate standard of living.
The Cameroon Occupation Forces’ actions in Mezam State are blatant violations of these fundamental international laws and demand urgent accountability. The international community must take immediate action to investigate these crimes, prosecute those responsible, and provide humanitarian assistance to the affected victims. Failure to act would not only allow further atrocities to continue but also undermine the principles of justice and human dignity.
