April 4, 2020, the people of Southern and Northern Ambazonia were subjected to one of the most horrific acts of violence perpetrated by the Cameroon Occupation Forces. What should have been an ordinary day turned into an unfathomable nightmare as armed forces descended upon towns and villages, unleashing a reign of terror that left more than 60 innocent civilians dead.
Among those brutally targeted were the most vulnerable—women, children, and elderly people—whose only crime was existing in a land torn by conflict. The merciless brutality of the attack left an indelible scar on the hearts and minds of the survivors, as eyewitnesses recounted the horrific scenes of abduction, torture, and cold-blooded execution.
As the atrocities unfolded, the cries of innocent civilians echoed through the air, pleading for mercy that was never granted. The occupation forces, acting with impunity, forcibly dragged men, women, and children from their homes, subjecting them to unspeakable acts of torture before executing them in cold blood.
More than 33 children and 24 women were among those mercilessly slaughtered, their lives cut short by a campaign of terror that recognized no distinction between combatants and civilians. The gruesome aftermath painted a grim picture of the extent of the brutality—lifeless bodies strewn across the ground, homes ransacked and set ablaze, and entire families wiped out in a single day. The sight of grieving parents holding their slain children, of elders weeping over the bodies of their loved ones, and of villages left in ruins was a stark reminder of the unchecked violence inflicted upon the people of Ambazonia.
The systematic nature of this massacre sent shockwaves across the region, instilling deep fear and anguish among the survivors. The deliberate targeting of women and children made it clear that this was not merely an act of war but a deliberate attempt to annihilate the very fabric of the community. The terror that unfolded on April 4, 2020, stands as one of the darkest chapters in the ongoing crisis, demanding urgent international attention and accountability for the crimes committed against the innocent.
This mass killing constitutes a War Crime and a Crime Against Humanity under International Humanitarian Law. Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions explicitly prohibits murder, torture, and cruel treatment of civilians, which were all evident in this massacre. Furthermore, Article 8(2)(b)(i) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) criminalizes intentionally directing attacks against civilians, particularly women and children, making this act a grave breach of international law.
Additionally, the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) guarantees children’s right to life and protection from violence, while the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) safeguards women from gender-based violence, including execution and torture.
The deliberate and systematic execution of over 60 civilians, including women and children, qualifies as a crime against humanity under Article 7 of the Rome Statute, as it reflects a widespread and systematic attack on a civilian population. The perpetrators of this atrocity must be held accountable before an international tribunal to ensure justice for the victims and to prevent further crimes against the people of Ambazonia.
